Online sales have grown– between 7 and 10 percent per month, from November 2016. No doubt this trend does appear to be eating into brick-and-mortar sales. The Census Bureau’s monthly retail sales report shows transactions at non-store retailers were up 11.9 percent over the year, while department store sales were down 6.4 percent. Sales at sporting goods, hobby, book and music stores were down 1.4 percent, while electronics and appliance stores saw a 3.8 percent cut. A recent consumer report shared that nearly 80 percent of Americans do at least some shopping on the internet, with 43 percent shopping online “weekly” or “a few times a month.” Many more of which are purchasing, directly through social media platforms that had engaged in any type of online purchasing behavior 16 years ago.”
We recently analyzed a retail client’s site, and they asked us to research their 5 top competitors that moved to e-commerce 2 to 3 years ago, and focus on rebuilding their site to include sales online. In addition, the client also asked us to redesign their brands messaging and create an entirely new campaign in which for them to progress into digital marketing of their products, and services. We were able to bring their brands online to successfully compete in their industry and boost traffic and sales for both in store and online sales. As e-commerce continues to take share from physical retail, it seems that brick-and-mortar chains with strong e-commerce operations will be the best-positioned for the future. A prime example is the acquisition of Whole Foods by Amazon.
